A Law to Enact The Smoak Tramway.

Smoak Tramway Act 1884

In order for the Smoak Tramway to legally operate, the SC Legislature had to pass an act. Here is the act:

AN ACT TO INCORPORATE THE SMOAK TRAMWAY COMPANY

Dated: Dec. 23, 1884, 18 stat. page 78. #491

For the purpose of constructing a tram road from Branchville to Four holes in Orangeburg County.

Incorporators: E.T.R. Smoak, John S. Smoak, A.N. Smoke, D.W. Smoak and Daniel E. Westbury.

The corporate existence shall last 30 years.

The company shall have the privilege of extending the line to any point in Orangeburg County. The line and branches may be laid with wood or iron rails.

The company shall have the use of every procedure available to other railroads in the state, in case the consent of the owners cannot be obtained.
